The FreeBSD Operating System
FreeBSD is an advanced, UNIX-like Operating System, derived from the original BSD UNIX, which was developed in the University of Berkeley, California. It is developed and maintained by a large team of individuals, who work on various aspects of it, like programming, documentation, advocacy, bug fixing, etc. It is mainly used in large servers, in companies like Yahoo!, Sony Japan, NetCraft and others. As a general purpose OS, it is also suitable for home and desktop usage. As the name implies, FreeBSD is Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and you may download it free of charge from a mirror site. A good choice for Greece, is Otenet's FTP Site
This site contains information on the FreeBSD operating system, and is primarily focused on the ongoing effort of translating its documentation into the Greek language.
- Read more details on the Greek Documentation Project and how you can help in this effort.
- FreeBSD Handbook: Greek Version Translation of the FreeBSD Handbook is a work in progress. This version is automatically rebuilt every hour. You may also try this build for more experimental changes.
- You can download a recent edition of the Greek FreeBSD Handbook in PDF format (or even in Openoffice ODT format if you prefer).
- Download the presentation of the FreeBSD project (PDF) as presented in FOSSCOMM by Giorgos Keramidas and the presentation of the Greek Documentation Effort: PDF or LaTeX source presented by Nikos Kokkalis.
- FreeBSD Handbook: English Version. Rebuilt daily.
- FreeBSD FAQ: Greek Version Translation of the FreeBSD FAQ is also a work in progress. Rebuilt every hour.
- Have a look at the Translations Status Page for info on the latest Greek / English files' revisions
- Visit the mirror build of the official www.freebsd.org website. This build may contain yet to be committed work from the Greek Documentation Team.
- Visit the local clone of the Mercurial repository where our ongoing work is kept.
- Download the documentation source trees and get more info on the automatic builds.
- My original FreeBSD articles:
- Beginning FreeBSD: An unofficial Greek guide to a FreeBSD desktop. Download from the mercurial repository (click manifest and then raw)- or directly from here. The guide is in odt (openoffice writer) format. This is also work in progress and is updated regularly. It will soon be available in PDF format. Please send your comments to my email.
- Basic UNIX commands (greek) for beginners: survival guide. Also useful for everyone with a shell account in www.freebsdgr.org
